The Welfare Benefits Unit offers specialist welfare benefits advice to those who work with members of the public. Our experienced advisers provide independent support through our advice line, publications, training, consultancy, campaigns and projects.
- Accurate advice, training and publications about an increasingly complex benefit system.
- A professional and quality assured service to ensure that specialist advice can be accessed through local support agencies and cascaded to a wide number of individuals.
- Information to promote the take-up of benefits and awareness of entitlement.
- A focal point for welfare rights work across North Yorkshire and York offering networking opportunities, updating and information.
The Welfare Benefits Unit aims to maximise benefit take-up, helping to reduce the incidence and impact of poverty and in doing so improve health, well-being, financial and social inclusion. We are a registered charity based in York. We primarily operate in York and North Yorkshire although some of our services are accessed by organisations working further afield.
Our Board of Trustees recently undertook a skills audit and identified a desire to enhance the existing broad range of skills and experience on the Board by recruiting one or more additional Trustees. Any or all of the following skills and experience would be of interest to us;
- experience of the benefits system, either as a recipient or an adviser, especially if you have used the services of the Welfare Benefits Unit;
- knowledge and understanding of the different communities (rural and/or urban) in North Yorkshire and York;
- experience of using digital and social media for promotional purposes.
The Board meets four times a year in York in the early evenings. Trustees may also undertake some additional duties by negotiation. This is an unremunerated position although expenses are payable. While experience of the role of Trustee would be useful, we also welcome those who are new to Trusteeship. All Trustees participate in an induction programme and ongoing support and mentoring can be provided.

Angela can also be available to answer any initial queries by phone if a pre-arranged appointment is made. Angela will pass all responses to the Trustees who will follow up by 22nd November 2019.
Freelance Adviser Positions
The WBU uses experienced benefits advisers on a freelance basis to provide occasional cover of our advice line (phone and email). This allows us to obtain extra support in busy times or to cover annual leave and sickness.
Freelance advisers join the team in the York office to provide the service.
The WBU advice line operates Monday to Friday between 9 am to 1 pm and 1 pm to 5 pm and work is allocated to cover a four-hour morning or afternoon session.
Freelance advisers are paid £20 per hour plus up to £20 towards travel costs.
We receive a wide range of interesting calls – some quite straightforward and others needing more information and guidance. The team here will support you during the session.
Work is offered on a sessional basis and we are unable to guarantee a minimum number of sessions.
